With proximity to the ocean, it’s no surprise that seafood is a hot commodity along Florida's First Coast, especially at restaurants within the Jacksonville area and in nearby St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city. In some cases, fresh catch often comes straight from a restaurateur’s own fleet. Shrimp, snapper, swordfish and grouper are plentiful. Yet southern-fried chicken, sushi, steak, or barbeque are also popular at locations sufficiently varied to suit most tastes and budgets. If some regional dishes seem to have added zing, credit the fact that St. Augustine is the only area in the nation where the Datil pepper is commercially grown. Hotter than a Jalepeno, the Datil was brought to the region from the Old World by Minorcan settlers. For the record, wild, native Muscadine grapes were plentiful from early discovery times in the area just north of St. Augustine all the way up to what is now Jacksonville. French Huguenots and the Spanish were the first to convert the grapes to wine, launching North American cultivation of grapes for wine production long before Californians got into the act. Now St. Augustine’s San Sebastian Winery carries on traditions for the birthplace of American vintages.
